Red Panda Project

April 17th, 2009

I was working on a research project and I thought that it was a good idea to post it on my blog.  Hope you enjoy it!

Red Pandas are small mammals that live in the forests of southeastern
Asia, western Napal, southern Tibet, Bhutan, and northeast India. They
live in a den on a forested mountain slope, in a group usually made of a
mom and her cubs. Red pandas spend a lot of their time in trees.
They come down to eat bamboo, and they can eat 70 pounds of bamboo each day.
Their claws help them climb trees. Adult red pandas usually are black, white, and red.
They have a cat like face, with long white whiskers, which is how they got
their scientific name Ailurus Fulgens. In other words, fire colored cat.
Panda is the Napalese word for poonya which means eater of bamboo. Red
pandas are not bears!!! They are in the raccoon family. They could be
pets, but they are endangered, so don’t try to get one even if they look
like they are going to die. You might want to keep in mind that red
pandas are as dangerous as raccoons. Cubs are born with fur, but are blind
and helpless. Because red pandas are endangered, you cannot hunt them.
Babies are born in litters of 1 to 4. The babies also eat bamboo but
before they can do that they need to nurse for the first 5 months. To produce enough milk for her
babies the mother needs to eat 3 times her normal diet.  The babies are gray and
fuzzy. Red pandas are being breed to increase in number. They are being
protected in China and Napal. Red pandas are fuzzy little creatures that
need our help.
